European Paper Week – Reinventing Growth
European paper industry focuses on sustainability and innovation
The European pulp and paper industry today concluded its 15th European Paper Week, focusing on sustainability and innovation in the sector under the theme “Reinventing Growth”. Within that context the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) presented its 6th sustainability report and the Two Team Project results. The exciting three-day event brought together over 350 people from the sector, related organisations as well as numerous representatives from the European institutions, providing a high-level platform for discussion.
European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik, welcomed CEPI’s 6th sustainability report and stressed that he is looking forward to the next report in a video message at CEPI’s Annual Meeting. He also sees the paper industry as one of the leading sectors in a circular economy.
The facts speak for themselves, -43% CO2 emissions per tonne of product since 1990, were recorded in the new report and a recycling rate of 71.7%. 65% of wood delivered to European mills is certified and accidents reduced by over 60% in the last 10 years. Recognising the achievements of the sector, former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson told the industry: “Sustainability is modernisation”.
In a panel, CEOs of the paper industry concentrated on the fact that the paper industry is a sustainable sector, stressing that sustainably also means financially viable.
The second part of the Annual Meeting featured European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard. She announced the winning concept of the Two Team Project, which was tasked to identify breakthrough technology concepts for the paper industry in its bid to lower CO2 emissions by 2050. “Global markets for resource and energy efficient solutions will grow. CEPI Roadmap 2050 and the ideas prepared in the Two Team Project show that the European pulp and paper industry is 'technology conscious' and ready for the future challenges. It's an example to be followed by other sectors.” she stressed.
The eight breakthrough technologies identified by the project are a combination of new ideas and of ideas that work in other sectors, but have never been utilised for the paper and pulp sector before. They include some cutting edge research findings as well as innovations that have not yet made it to the market. The solutions are not only found in technology, but also in new ways of working and even changes to the way production is measured today. More importantly, they can open up entirely new product portfolios for the future.
Commenting on the outcome, Teresa Presas, CEPI Director General, said: “The results are beyond expectations. We believe the teams have found the key to the largest industrial breakthroughs in decades in our industry. However, the project went as far as any industry sector can go in organising an open innovation and it is up to the companies to take the next step and develop the concepts. This will need new forms of cooperation, and the support of European and national policy makers.“
The European Paper Week this year covered a large variety of topics related to EU policy and experts from different fields were able to debate EU-US trade discussions as well as European standards for paper for recycling and benefits of print media. Additionally, energy issues were discussed and young researchers received the opportunity to present their recent research results to a large audience of industry representatives.
The summary of the proceedings will be available in a few weeks time. The next European Paper Week will take place 25-27 November 2014 in Brussels.

Basta! Paper Industry Wants EU Economy To Be More Competitive
The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) is introducing a new campaign, calling for the EU to put the manufacturing industry at the heart of the European economy.
Due to launch in 2014 in time for the EU elections, ‘Basta! Get back on track!’ calls for the EU to reduce red tape, help win the global competitiveness race, rethink existing policies and put the focus back on industry. Demonstrating where European policy has gone wrong, the Basta! campaign will also highlight where EU policy has been well-implemented to support industry on a national level.
At European Paper Week, CEOs from Sappi Fine Paper Europe, UPM, Smurfit Kappa, Holmen, SCA, Portucel Soporcel, Stora Enso and Mondi, will come together to discuss the impact legislation can have on European competitiveness. The European manufacturing industry represents innovation, investment and jobs and it can help overcome the economic crisis – but not when legislation is contradicting, overlapping or disproportionate.
Teresa Presas, Director General of CEPI, said, “The paper industry wants to stay within a strong Europe setting a worldwide example. However, the current legislative situation is leading to imports of unemployment and exports of pollution. We urge policymakers to get back on track and focus on competitiveness. We say Basta! to the impact excessive legislative burdens are having on the manufacturing industry."
Unfolding the potential of Print Media
The leaflet outlines how the cluster of industries which form the print media value chain - papermaking, paper converting, printing and publishing – are valuable contributors to the new low-carbon, resource-efficient and knowledge-based economy. This in turn contributes to the EU 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Growth reinvented - CEPI announces European Paper Week 2013
The European Paper Week 2013 will take place 26-28 November at the EU Thon Hotel in Brussels. The pulp and paper industry's top management will meet to discuss with representatives of the value chain and policy makers.
This European Paper Week presents "Growth Reinvented". The paper industry added value and created new products for new markets in recent years – thus reinventing growth. Moreover, the CEPI 2050 Roadmap towards a low-carbon bio-economy has set up a pathway to the industry’s growth at a time of economic and financial crisis, helping to reignite industrial growth in Europe.
The Annual Meeting will feature European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard and European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik, as well as former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson. The pinnacle of this year's European Paper Week is the presentation of the highly-anticipated winning concept of the innovative CEPI Two Team Project.

The Two Team Project: A successful delivery on the two objectives of the CEPI 2050 Roadmap – namely 80% decarbonisation of the industry and 50% value creation in 2050 – is only possible when breakthrough technologies are available by 2030. To achieve this, CEPI set up the Two Team Project. Open letter addressing DG Connect’s paper-free communication policy
The European Commission’s DG Connect committed to a paper -free communication policy in an article published on their website, but several organisations of the paper value chain including CEPI, Intergraf, FEDMA and FEPE answered in an open letter asking DG Connect not to abandon millions of citizens with their communication policy.
Paper-based communication remains very important for millions of Europeans, if one only thinks of all the people who do not have online access, they will be left behind if communication becomes paperless. Despite the benefits of digital technology, paper should be complementary to electronic media and not discarded. Printed communication remains essential for various reasons, it encompasses a big part of the European industry. Implementing this policy will in turn discriminate millions who value printed communication or depend on it as they do not have internet access.

European Commission survey on attitudes of Europeans towards building the single market for green products
This Flash survey examines EU citizens' knowledge of green products and their reasons for buying, or not buying them. The behaviour change analysis suggests that actions on the price gap between green and non-green products as well as on how green products are presented in shops should be prioritised to change consumers’ behaviour and convert them into regular buyers of green products. Moreover, even if most people are willing to consider environmental factors when making purchases, only few feel fully informed. In particular, only just over half of EU citizens trust producers' claims about the environmental performance of their products, and a majority of EU citizens do not trust companies' reports on their own environmental performance.

Print to impress – a case study: CEPI’s 20th anniversary booklet
A special gift awaited the attendees of the CEPI Annual Meeting: CEPI’s 20th anniversary booklet ‘Sharing a vision’. This publication was put together by CEPI’s Communications team for the association’s 20th anniversary. Using different printing and cutting techniques, this special edition portrays CEPI’s work in the last 20 years and provides several very interesting lists of facts about the industry. It is a remarkable demonstration of what an amazing marketing medium print is.
The booklet starts with a timeline showcasing milestones in CEPI’s life and an overview of former presidents and managing directors. It includes a photo of events dating back to 1992 when CEPI was first formed. CEPI Directors contributed with articles on their topic of expertise, to outline CEPI’s work and how it has evolved throughout the years.
A lot of thought was put into the book design and print, with special techniques being used to add tactile and emotional value. The cover was printed with laser cutting and presents the anniversary logo in a different dimension, while CEPI enters yet another year of existence. The book contains folded pages (reference to origami technique), while giving the publication the feel of using various types of paper: one section of the book is printed on ‘newspaper-like’ paper and the statistics section is printed on graphic style paper, reminding the reader of the time spent scribbling on paper at school. Printing references were also included, such as the pantone colour reference of the CEPI logo.
The booklet contains a page with an embossed golden tree, pushed out from the rest of the page to add depth as well as a ‘scratch’n’sniff’ page covered with flowers. The readers only have to brush their fingers across it to allow for the fragrance of flowers to escape.
It also shows that print has the ability to connect and provide the reader with space and time. Layar (http://www.layar.com/) and QR codes are spread throughout the pages, rendering print clickable through a new technique called mobile augmented reality. This gives the reader the possibility to surf the net and visit several pages like the statistics graphs, the answers to the quiz, the photo competition pages or videos.
CEPI hopes to have added a beautiful case study with this publication capturing the readers’ mind. It definitely proves one thing: Paper - an ever so traditional and simple medium, has the power to touch.

'Fascination: Paper' at the European Commission
For the 20th anniversary of the association, CEPI’s offices changed its decoration and hosted the ‘Fascination Paper’ exhibition organised by IAPMA – the International Association of Paper and Paper Making Artists. This exhibition was then moved to the Breydel building of the European Commission where it was hosted for a month.IAPMA created this exhibition for its 25th anniversary and CEPI (the Confederation of European Paper Industries) decided to make it available to the Brussels circle and exhibit parts of it for CEPI’s 20th anniversary in the Breydel building of the European Commission. The exhibits showcase 56 artists from 18 countries and the paper art displayed varies from traditional to experimental. Paper installations, objects, three dimensional paper artworks, pulp painting, paper jewellery, book objects, collage, assemblage in small or large scale are exhibited.

The objects on display showed that paper can be very thin yet very stable; it can also be thick and heavy. Paper fibres can be completely homogeneous or varied, and can create surfaces ranging from fluffy and soft to coarse and rough, sometimes equalling the stability of hardwood. Thanks to is usual two-dimensionality, it can be moulded and folded into any desired shape. No other material has so many different characteristics.
PPI awards winners
Organized by RISI, the leading information provider to the global forest products industry, the PPI Awards was launched in 2009. Due to its success and popularity, it has evolved into an annual event. The PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognizing the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector. It provides a platform that honors the leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the industry.
The 2012 PPI Awards returned to Brussels on November 12, 2012. It was held alongside the CEPI European Paper Week event. In addition, RISI organized an afternoon seminar before the gala dinner which provided valuable insights and information.

About the Awards
The PPI Awards provided an opportunity for pulp and papermakers worldwide to show off their achievements on a global platform. Companies who chose to enter the PPI Awards submitted their entries online for one or more categories. These entries were then judged by an international panel of independent judges. The finalists were chosen and invited to attend a gala dinner where the winners were revealed. Winners were presented with their trophies by the sponsor of each category and a celebrity host.

The PPI Awards gala dinner attracted attendees from various parts of the supply chain and included financial analysts, suppliers, pulp and paper producers, marketing agencies, consultants, international press and associations. Unfold the Future: the forest fibre industry nominated Report of the Year
CEPI's 2050 Roadmap has been nominated in the category Report of the Year at the European Public Affairs Awards. Now in their fifth year, the awards highlight success and encourage best practice throughout the European public affairs community; bringing recognition to individuals, organisations, issues and campaigns. Nominations launch in June and organisations throughout the profession are eligible to nominate both internally and externally until Friday 21 September 2012. Voting opens when the shortlist is announced in October and is open to all individuals working for an organisation listed on the Transparency Register and/or listed in the EPAD Directory.
The results of this year's awards will be announced during the awards dinner on Wednesday 14 November held at the stunning Albert Hall.
CEPI's report is competing with the Environmental Sustainability Report from FoodDrinkEurope and Women on Boards in Europe: from a snail’s pace to a giant leap from The European Women’s Lobby.

It's not often that a publication by a Brussels trade association causes a stir. The CEPI 2050 Roadmap has. It is frequently used as an example by policy makers, both at the European Commission and in the Parliament. The process of engaging stakeholders and industry representatives was also innovative and much appreciated by the target audiences. The report has united the paper industry internally and given them incentives to think about the future in positive terms.
The final document was supported by a dedicated website and a special Facebook page. The CEPI 2050 roadmap inspired many of CEPI's national members to start their own national roadmap for 2050. It has influenced board meetings in all member countries and many companies in the paper industry sector. Many other industry associations in Brussels are now working on similar reports.
